During Saddam's rule Iraq had 70 SU-25 (Frogfoot) close ground support jets, a Soviet counterpart to U.S. A-10 Thunderbolt II.
First one was used during '80 in Afghanistan during SSSR invasion, and later one during U.S. invasion of Iraq and later on A-10 become venerable.
This both jets are similar, only important difference among them is that SU-25 could speed up to mach 1 after releasing all payload, while A-10 remained a lame flying duck and it has a multi-barrel gatling gun with depleted uranium ammunition. Because of that last feature now Iraqi kids are born distorted, and dying of cancer.
According to printed edition of
so far, during the last week, 5 SU-25 arrived from Russian war reserves (some of them still have holes from Afghanistan war), and 7 from Iran (where they were flown by Iraqi pilots during last U.S. invasion of Iraq). 3 planes originating from Iran were recognized by their serial numbers painted on fuselage.
Iraq still has 30 pilots that flew this plane 11 years ago, and are now re-trained by Russian and Iranian pilots that will not engage in battle.
Iraqi PM said that they were crazy when they signed the contract with the U.S. for delivery of the 36 overpriced, and degraded F-16IQ, block 52, that cannot use GPS guided bombs and air to air AIM-120 AMRAAM rockets.
Although handing over of the first F-16 to Iraqi Air Force was conducted last month in U.S., not a single jet was delivered to Iraq. During this time U.S. has retrieved from it's Iraq Balad base personal for receive and integration of F-16 into Iraq Air Force under a context of a coming war danger.
As PM Maliki is of Shia origin U.S. will not deliver F-16 that could be borrowed to Iran for analysis.
